Lewiston is a city and the county seat of Nez Perce County, Idaho, United States, in the state’s north central region. It is the second-largest city in the northern Idaho region, behind Coeur d’Alene, and ninth-largest in the state.

Lewiston is an outdoor paradise year-round thanks to mild climates in the Lewis-Clark Valley, where the Clearwater River meets the meandering Snake River. Venture by boat to a famed deep river gorge, trace the steps of renowned explorers Lewis and Clark, and explore a quaint and welcoming downtown.

The Gateway to Hells Canyon, south of Lewiston, is a 16-kilometer-wide canyon (deep river gorge) along the Idaho, Washington and Oregon borders. Hells Gate State Park, once the site of a Nez Perce Indian village, offers riverside camping with canyon boat trips while Hells Canyon National Recreation Area offers many opportunities for outdoor adventure, including river rafting, fishing and hiking. Take a jet boat tour of the canyon with stops along the way to see petroglyphs, a shipwreck site and artifacts. Also in the area: Salmon River Canyons, a breathtaking area of rafting and swimming on the largest river without a dam in the continental USA.

Lewiston’s mild climate makes it the perfect destination for nearly year-round recreation; when other areas are awash with snow, Lewiston’s golf courses can still be played. Other outdoor activities include hunting and camping. Hike, bike or jog pathways along the city’s pristine rivers.

Lewiston is at the heart of the early 1800s expedition by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
